CEO: Sberbank may issue cryptocurrency Sbercoin in 2021

MOSCOW, Dec 1 (PRIME) -- Russia’s largest bank Sberbank may issue its own cryptocurrency Sbercoin in 2021, CEO German Gref said late on Monday during the Investor Day.

“It’s quite possible that we’ll start experimenting next year with the issuance of own currency, a so-called Sbercoin. Certainly, we look at what the central bank does closely and are in the negotiation process with the regulator. It all should correlate to the context chosen as a development strategy of the digital ruble,” Gref said.

“All these months, we’ve been working on the technology, this is why as soon as it becomes possible on January 1, we’ll offer the services to the market.”
